KHULA OUTREACH

2025

Cape Town

Student Elective Outline

The Khula Outreach 2025 program offers 36 final-year veterinary students from Onderstepoort an immersive elective experience in Cape Town, focusing on diverse areas of the veterinary profession. Over a week, students engage in practical activities like surgical sterilisations, private practice days, and welfare work, including a vaccination drive. Sponsored training sessions, case study discussions, and online coaching prepare them for their community service year. Khula covers most costs during the program, excluding travel to Cape Town. This initiative aims to broaden students’ perspectives on veterinary work and inspire them to become active rabies ambassadors in their communities.

Student Education & Practical Skills Development

You will be exposed to different aspects of our unique profession.

Private practice: Students will spend a day at Tygerberg Animal Hospital for a specialist private practice experience. Here you will observe consultations, diagnostic work-ups and an array of surgical procedures.

Welfare: We will focus on the welfare aspect of our profession through exposure during the Saturday Vaccination Drive and also through welfare sterilisations with Dr Charlotte Philip at the Bergzicht Animal Hospital.

Industry: There are exciting opportunities to diversify into this part of our profession and Khula provides insights into the capabilities and skills one needs to build in order to do so. Students will have the unique experience of engaging with multiple vets from the veterinary industry.

Rabies Awareness & Community Engagement

Rabies kills tens of thousands of humans every year! During each elective week there will be an outreach day where we strive to vaccinate as many dogs and cats as possible in different rural communities around Cape Town. We hope to inspire you, as the future generation of vets, to become leaders in community empowerment and rabies management.
