ABOUT

Our Story

Khula, a Zulu word, meaning to grow or thrive. Khula Vet was founded by Dr Charlotte Philip and Dr Michelle Markram (Armour).

Khula Bespoke Veterinary Training was created by vets for vets. We believe that education is key to empowerment. Veterinary Science is both challenging and deeply rewarding. With increasing stressors, elevated suicide rates and a large proportion of young vets moving out of private practice – there is clearly a need, now more than ever, for mentorship and training in the early years of a vet’s career.

We wish for our colleagues to benefit from this support, so they can thrive in their work environment and find fulfilment in this unique industry. Khula has expanded this bespoke training to include veterinary nurses, animal health technicians, kennel staff and receptionists. Our course content is tailor-made, designed to meet the needs of both a practice and individuals. The aim is to build and nurture a well rounded veterinary team.

Meet the Team

Dr Charlotte Philip

7 years at Onderstepoort done and dusted! Time to dive into that big ocean.. but could I even swim? My veterinary career started in 2013, at a small animal practice in Johannesburg. I look back at those first years in Sandton with immense gratitude, it was a steep learning curve but my patient mentor guided me along the way. I was taught the importance of building client relationships and thorough work ups.

My next step was to join a veterinary group in Sunninghill where I had the privilege of working with such talented colleagues, including Michelle. This practice had a strong focus on teamwork and I was again exposed to a high standard of veterinary care, and exceptional client service. I then stepped into industry where I gained invaluable experience in pet nutrition and sales, then on to practice management. The road has lead me to Khula Vet. It is our dream to empower colleagues to thrive in their work environments and find their niche. I couldn’t be more proud to be partnering with Michelle on this inspiring journey.

Dr Michelle Markram

I entered this wonderful profession in 2014 after having qualified with a BVSc degree from Onderstepoort in 2013. I was extremely blessed to have started my veterinary career in an amazing practice in Johannesburg, which set a foundation of a high standard of practice with a focus on client communication.

After almost 5 years at this practice my itchy feet took me on an adventure locuming around the UK. Working in many different types of practices with different types of people gave me an insight into what works and what doesn’t and what is ultimately needed for an enjoyable work environment. In the crazy year of 2020, the unique opportunity presented itself to join my dear friend Dr Charlotte Philip on this incredible venture that is Khula Vet. It combines my love for all things veterinary with a love of teaching, while also having the potential to positively impact the veterinary profession.
